THE JOURNEY
Kerry Quorn
Hello and greetings to everyone who is looking to increase the wellbeing and resilience of their staff, organisation, community or company.
I’ve been in the business of ‘wellbeing’ since I started my professional life as a general nurse in the NHS, some forty years ago, then completing my Post Grad Diploma in Integrated Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2009 and an MSc in Health and Wellbeing, plus many other courses along the way.
I’ve worked continually in many health and social care areas, including Young People’s Substance Misuse Services, as an NHS nurse with homeless people, within prison, as a therapist with adults who suffered trauma as children, in Primary Care mental health services as a therapist , in workplace wellbeing, and with carers – where I was asked to research write, and deliver workshops on subjects such as ‘stress management’, ‘building your own resilience plan’, and ‘recognising and dealing with compassion fatigue’. These workshops have been delivered to multiple groups since, and have received great feedback. My last role involved working as a therapist with homeless clients in an inner-city area for Primary Care, in which I also delivered wellbeing training for staff and other agencies.
My passion for training others emerged initially from my own search to maximise my own wellbeing, practising what I preach. Using the research-based skills, I was also struck by the feeling of self-efficacy that came with having the tools that I needed. I still think that is one of the more surprising outcomes: people’s confidence in managing their own wellbeing grows, and the beauty of a toolkit is that you can measure it (seeing increased levels of skill, and feeling of efficacy).
I firmly believe in the power of having of skills ready to go to when the going gets tough and challenging. I hope managers, organisations and businesses will invest in their staff, as there are numerous benefits for the individual – but also for organisations and companies in terms of retention of good staff, reduction in sickness, staff loyalty and success.
